If you Google YouTube Forklift Pallet Racking Disasters and you will find a plethora of human errors leading to costly outcomes for the companies involved. In this blog, we will offer a suggestion that will make a forklift driver’s life easier when loading or unloading pallets from racking.
In the photo above, you will notice two line marking items. One is a yellow edge line painted 200mm off the foot of each vertical leg. How will this help a forklift driver do his job safely? The yellow line will give the driver a visual cue to keep the lower pallets inside the line. This will give the forklift clear access to the racking above. Simple but effective.
The other is a painted stencil indicating the forklift’s traffic area. With this, pedestrians are being told that there is the possibility of forklift traffic in this area. Whilst in Queensland pedestrians are required to look out for forklifts, at least the message has been spelled out with a clear visual pictogram and wording.

Different Lengths of Pallet Lines
However, in some cases, the pallet lines need to be different widths. An example of this is in a tyre logistics warehouse. We all know tyres are different sizes; think about a big truck tyre size versus a much smaller motorcycle tyre. Overseas pallets may be 1.1m2. Another example is pallets used for paper movements are much smaller than the Australian average. As you can imagine, in the warehouse accommodation needs to be made for these different storage and handling needs. In these instances, Linemarkers South East Queensland will accurately measure and mark each pallet space to ensure safe and sure storage.
Space also needs to be made for safe forklift movement between rows of pallets. It does depend on the length of the load but in most cases, it is around 3 to 3.5 metres. Consider the area required for forklift turning as well.
Space for Pedestrians
Pedestrians require clearly designated walk ways to avoid forklift traffic and to provide safe ingress and egress in a warehouse or factory. This might be as simple as two lines or more complicated walk ways with pedestrian crossings. Walk way lines will be the topic of another blog, but it is important to know that warehouse and factory safety can be enhanced by appropriate line marking that is recognised by all staff.
